Anthropology
and sociology are closely related social science disciplines. They study
the ways in which people live together under various social and cultural
conditions. By exploring the multifaceted dimensions of human societies,
they seek to understand human behavior, social interactions, and institutional
structures in all their diversity. Anthropology and Sociology are two
fields of study that can help you better understand the human experience
and condition, both in our American lives and in the world-at-large. Here
at Hobart and William Smith we aid students who wish to explore these
remarkable fields in any one of several exciting ways: by majoring or
minoring in either Anthropology or Sociology or by doing a combined major
in Anthropology/Sociology.
About Our Degrees or Programs
Anthropology Program Our anthropology curriculum seeks
to combine the
best of two worlds—the solid foundations of established academic
knowledge with real-world relevancy and meaning. Over the past few years,
we have been hard at work refining our offerings with an eye to making
the outstanding analytical tools and knowledge base of anthropology accessible
to undergraduate students. While carefully avoiding dilution of content,
we have tried to reorganize our teaching around questions and themes that
make it clear how people in general can benefit from the data and theories
of anthropologists.
Sociology Program-The sociology program
is very broad in its offerings, and particularly unusual in its cross-cultural
focus. The program has a strong foundation in social theory and methods,
and offers courses well beyond the range of standard courses in the field—for
example, we have regular offerings in environmental studies, women in
the Third World, social deviances, the sociology of community, social
movements, the sociology of education, the sociology of everday life,
religion in American society, sex and gender, even courses on the 19th
century British social critic John Ruskin!
