Hobart and William Smith Colleges Summer Tour to China

Summer 2006

ATTENTION:  ALL FIRST-, SECOND, AND THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures and the Center for Global Education announce a special “China Immersion Program” to be offered for approximately three weeks (May 15-June 4). This program will present 10 students a rare opportunity to study and travel with Hobart and William Smith faculty, Professors Zhou and McCabe, to the People’s Republic of China. The itinerary for this study tour is still being set but is likely to include many of the following cities:  Shanghai, Suzhou, Nanjing, and Beijing. Except for a $500 fee, all student transportation between China and Geneva, room and board, and tuition expenses on this program will be paid by a grant from the Freeman Foundation.  Students selected for this program will receive 1 academic credit from the Colleges for successfully completing the academic work associated with the program, which will include taking a special seminar in Asian Studies (ASN 393) during the fall semester of 2006 for which they will write an extensive research paper on a topic dealing with contemporary China.  (Students must be on campus in Fall 2006 and enroll in ASN 393 to be eligible for this program.)

Selected students will be required to remain at the Colleges after the completion of exams at the end of Spring term.  During the week before traveling to China, orientation and academic classes related to China will be given.  The timing of this program should allow students to still find work over the summer months.

Students will be selected for the China Immersion Program on the following basis:

  1. An excellent academic record at the Colleges.
  2. An exemplary personal record at the Colleges.
  3. A serious academic interest in China and other parts of Asia.
  4. A clear indication of how an academic trip to China will further your academic and personal goals.
