Summer Science

ribbons

The chemistry department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges takes seriously its responsibility of educating, mentoring and training the science professionals of the future. We recognize that education must extend beyond the classroom and this commitment is evidenced by the extensive opportunities for student engagement in meaningful undergraduate research activities. Feedback from our alums indicates that we provide an excellent background with which to pursue a variety of post-graduate careers.

Summer Science in Chemistry at Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Each summer a number of chemistry majors remain on campus to work one-on-one with a faculty member. This program is open to all first years, sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing further study in chemistry or biochemistry. Participants receive a stipend, a room in a college house and a modest food allowance. Research projects normally are ongoing for 8-10 weeks.

  • This is an excellent opportunity for students to
  • Gain research and laboratory skills
  • Experience the excitement of discovery
  • Gain self-understanding about their own personal interests and abilities
  • Meet faculty
  • Develop friendships with peers.

Students work hard and play hard. There are a number of social activities intended to forge lasting relationships. Students and faculty organize cookouts, volleyball games, trips to Darien Lake amusement park, Chinese dinners, etc. There are also weekly group meetings to help students to develop the tools necessary to effectively communicate their scientific results to others.

Faculty work hard to raise funds to support this program. The following agencies have generously provided support:

The Merck/AAAS Foundation

The Jesse B. Cox Environmental Program

Hobart and William Smith Colleges

The National Science Foundation

Novartis Pharmaceutical

The Council on Undergraduate Research

The American Chemical Society-Petroleum Research Fund
