Alumnae/Alumni

Our teacher education graduates land TEACHING JOBS! Of those 1999 graduates who chose to teach directly after graduating from Hobart and William Smith and who were willing to relocate, 100% found teaching jobs in their certification field. The same 100% figure describes graduates from 2000 and 2001. Our alums are teaching at all grade levels, in all kinds of public, private, and environmental schools all over the country. Graduates from the past five years are currently teaching in schools in Arizona, Vermont, Hawaii, New York, Louisiana, New Jersey, Georgia, New Hampshire, Montana, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maine, Michigan, Virginia, and Florida. And in North and South Carolina. And some in Geneva, New York.

Several recent graduates participated in or are presently participating in the competitive and challenging program, Teach for America. Through this program two past grads taught in Harlem and in rural North Carolina respectively, while two recent alumnae were located in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area.

When school principals consider our graduates for a teaching position they are truly impressed to know that Hobart and William Smith graduates have completed a rigorous Teacher Education Program that is in addition to their undergraduate liberal arts major and minor. And they are thrilled that our graduates have had four full semesters of classroom experience BEFORE they do their full semester of student teaching. Then when the principals interview our graduates and hear them articulate clearly and passionately their own philosophies of education or their conception of classroom management or their understanding of inclusive schooling, they feel fortunate to be able to hire graduates from our Teacher Education Program.

Some of our alums use their education background and certification as stepping stones to graduate school for a masters degree in reading, early childhood education, elementary education, special education, school administration, school counseling, school psychology, social work, religious education, environmental education, English as a Second Language, Dance Education, and public administration.

In addition, several graduates are now working in major publishing houses as editors in the textbook or children's literature departments. We know of one graduate who is home-schooling her young children, others who taught in Romania and Japan, and yet another who taught in China.

Hobart and William Smith students who graduated from our Teacher Education Program worked hard to complete both an academic major and minor PLUS teacher certification. Their reward has been the opportunity to choose to teach or study or work in precisely the field and locale they prefer.
