The best storytelling is highly imaginative. So
are the best college English programs.
The English and Comparative Literature curriculum at Hobart and
William Smith begins with the premise that traditional coverage
of great literature, renowned authors, and classic genres is a must.
Then the plot thickens. Students are encouraged to go beyond simply
reading celebrated texts to pursue special concentration programs
in areas such as:
- Critical Theory
- Creative Writing
- Film
- Theatre
- Particular Century or National Tradition
Literary analysis and theory are approached from a broad range
of perspectives. For instance “Psychoanalysis and Literature”
examines how literary interpretation can be deepened by psychoanalytical
understandings. Feminist approaches include such issues as gender
roles, representations of women, violence, madness, and subjectivity.
We offer courses in “Globalism and Literature,” “Environmental
Literature,” “Post-Apocalyptic Literature,” "African-American
Literature," and many more that draw on multi-disciplinary
perspectives to enhance the experience of literature. We offer serious
study of the history of film and creative writing workshops in poetry,
fiction, creative nonfiction, plays and screenplays.
