Welcome to the Dept. of Geoscience, Hobart and William Smith Colleges,
web site. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are small, undergraduate,
liberal arts colleges in Geneva, New York. Geneva is on the northwest
corner of Seneca Lake halfway between Rochester and Syracuse. The
geology outside our door or within driving distance of our campus,
includes the Paleozoic sedimentary strata of former inland seas,
the ancient igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Adirondacks, the
folded and faulted rocks of the central Appalachians, and the local
glaciated landscapes. Seneca Lake, literally at our doorstep, is
a superb outdoor laboratory and facilitates the best way to study
geology - in the field.
Why Geoscience?
Geoscience
is the study of our planet, its rocks, oceans, and atmosphere. Many
people find a deep personal satisfaction in better understanding
our planet and its history and cyclic processes, but there are also
important practical applications. Geoscientists use their expertise
to monitor changes in the environment, to predict and evaluate how
human activities may contribute to environmental change, and to
manage the earth's resources. After graduation, geoscientists do
practically anything including careers in environmental consulting,
natural resource management, academia, space exploration, teaching
at the K-12 level, sports commentary for ESPN, and writing about
the environment. The future is yours to take. To learn more about
our geoscience program, course offerings, faculty, students, and
facilities see below.
About Our Program
We offer a wide range of Geoscience courses from the tradiational
geology courses on rocks, fossils and minerals to others that emphasize
the importance of water, air and the environment. All of our courses
utilize the outdoors as our natural laboratory. The Geoscience Program
melds these courses with other science offerings to help students
develop a scientific understanding of the earth and its processes.
Many students combine geoscience with offerings in the Environmental
Studies Program as one way of applying their expertise in geoscience.
