Double Majors
Perhaps you are deeply interested in two academic programs
and are thinking about the possibility of double majoring. Double majoring
can be an exciting path but it requires alot of work and very careful
planning in order to complete all the requirements for each major as
well as the additional requirements for graduation. If you are considering
this option here are a few points to keep in mind.
Uniqueness requirements. Each major a student completes must contain
at least six courses that are not counted toward any other major.
The disciplinary/interdisciplinary requirement. Our curriculum
requires that each student experience at least one indepth disciplinary
study and one indepth interdisciplinary study. If one of your two majors
is disciplinary and the other interdisciplinary then you will have satisfied
this requirement. However, if both of your majors are disciplinary or
both are interdisciplinary, then you will still be required to complete
an additional minor to fulfill the requirement.
Two interdisciplinary majors. If both of your majors are interdisciplinary
then you will need to complete an established disciplinary minor listed
in the catalogue. However, in a resolution passed by the faculty (October
4, 1999) any uniqueness requirements pertaining to this minor were waived.
Thus you may count as many courses as you wish from either of your majors
toward the requirements of the disciplinary minor.
Two disciplinary majors. If both majors are disciplinary then
you must still complete an interdisciplinary minor. This may be an established
interdisciplinary minor listed in the catalogue. As above, the uniqueness
requirements for the minor are waived and you can count any courses toward
the minor. In addition, the October 4 faculty resolution created the option
of an individually designed interdisciplinary minor for double
disciplinary majors. These minors are individually constructed with the
help of your two major advisers.
An individually designed interdisciplinary minor (this option
is only available to students completing two disciplinary majors. Forms
for these minors are available through the Registrar's Office.). The
requirements for an individual interdisciplinary minor are as follows:
- the minor must be comprised of a minimum of five courses,
- it must address a single problem or area of inquiry from at least
two identifiable disciplinary points of view.
- it must be approved by both of the student's two major advisers.
Text of the October 4, 1999 faculty resolution:
A DEGREE CANDIDATE MUST HAVE COMPLETED THE REQUIREMENTS
OF AN ACADEMIC MAJOR AND AND ACADEMIC MINOR OR SECOND MAJOR. ONE OF
THESE MUST BE BASED IN A DISCIPLINE. THE OTHER MUST BE INTERDISCIPLINARY
IN CHARACTER.
Students electing two disciplinary majors may meet the requirement
of an interdisciplinary component by completing either an established
or an individually designed interdisciplinary minor. An individually
designed interdisciplinary minor comprises a minimum of five courses
that address a single problem or area of inquiry from at least two identifiable
disciplinary points of view and is approved by each of the student's
academic advisers. Courses within an established or individual interdisciplinary
minor may include courses accepted for the student's majors, when the
minor is completed in fulfillment of the interdisciplinary graduation
requirement. The option of an individually designed interdisciplinary
minor is available only to students pursuing two disciplinary majors.[Note:
The minimum of five cocurses for an individually designed interdisciplinary
minor refers to semester courses.]
Students electing two interdisciplinary majors may
meet the requirement of a disciplinary component by completing an established
disciplinary minor. Courses counted within the disciplinary minor may
include courses accepted for the student's majors, when the minor is
completed in fulfillment of the disciplinary graduation requirement.
