At Hobart and William Smith, history is more than just a
litany of dates, places, and major world events. It is a comprehensive exploration of the past that allows for an enriched understanding of humanity's present and future.

Given that definition, it is only fitting that our history department offer a broad roster of collage of history imagescourses that transcend traditional boundaries of study. In addition to revolutions, epochs, and important politicians and thinkers, our students investigate the historical significance of the ordinary people and universal affairs such as food provision, medical care, and popular culture. In other words, HWS history majors are as interested in exploring landmark events in the life of the average family-birth, marriage, child-rearing-as they are those regarding the family of humans.

Each area of concentration hosts a mini-curriculum of its own, paying heed to the panoramic influences that have defined various countries and cultures throughout the ages. You can investigate the histories of Africa and the Middle East, America and Latin America, Europe and Russia, and Asia. Should you wish to dig further into a particular geographic or thematic area of interest, there are always independent study and Honors projects to consider.

Hobart and William Smith's history department holds the keys that unlock so many doors to the past and open those to the future.
