The History Department is located
in Henry House, a two-story frame building, at 606 South Main Street,
on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
We’re
between Delancey House and Kappa Alpha fraternity and across the
street from Alumni House.
Henry House was built c. 1808, nearly two decades before the Erie
Canal opened, when this part of upper New York State was still
the frontier. One of our offices was originally a kitchen and has
a fireplace that was used for open-hearth cooking and that also
has a bread oven; some of the
old implements are still there.
Long a private residence
and much altered over the years, Henry House was donated to the
Colleges in 1974 by David H. Henry ‘39, in honor of his parents,
David M. and Dorothy B. Henry, who had bought it in 1936. Henry
House was designated an historical building in 1965.
