Biographical Note

Benjamin Hale was born on November 23, 1797 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bowdoin College, in Maine, in 1818. He then studied theology at Andover Seminary. Upon leaving Andover he started teaching at Saco Academy. He became a professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at Dartmouth College in 1827. He was president of then Geneva College (renamed Hobart Free College in 1851 and Hobart College in 1860) from 1836 until 1858. He died on 1863 in Newburyport.
