Faculty Guidelines for Library Reserves
The Voyager Catalog supports electronic reserve holdings in two very useful ways:
- "Stable" links from catalog reserve listings connect to articles in our full text databases – if the item is in our full text database, students can go directly from your reserve list in the catalog or your Blackboard page to read or print an article. Stable links=No copyright problems!
- Links from the catalog reserve listing and your Blackboard to scanned page images if no full text is available on line. Copyright applies. We will get Copyright Clearance Center permission for scans if possible. For these items, clean photocopies and complete bibliographic citations are necessary. Permission requests can run six weeks or more, so please give the library as much lead time as you can.
The library intends to make all reserves available electronically if copyright
permission can be obtained.
Paper journal article and book chapter reserves, video and audio reserves, are unchanged as below:
- We will attempt to obtain copyright permission if you intend to use:
- More than one photocopy of a journal article or book chapter
- More than one chapter from a book
- Excerpts from a book totaling more than 10% of the book, but not a chapter
- Video or audio recordings you have made of broadcasts, performances, or other presentations
- Copies you have made of original audio or video materials
- Submitted materials must include the complete bibliographic citation written on the material.
Out-of-print sources may still be copyrighted and don't necessarily give us more latitude.
Please keep in mind that copyright permission is not always obtainable in a reasonable time and at a reasonable price.
Reserves are processed in order received. For our own library books a week advance notice is helpful. Personal copies or photocopied articles will take several days when extensive material arrives at the beginning of the term. Please submit reserves weekdays; no staff is available to process reserves on weekends. Forms for listing materials to be put on Reserve can be submitted online or printed at http://academic.hws.edu/library/facultyservices.asp#2.
