How do I....
To find books in the library, search the Catalog. The Catalog allows you to search by keyword, author, title, and subject to find out what books are currently owned or on order.
To find a book in the library you will need a call number. Go to the Call# page http://voyager.hws.edu/help/locations.html or use a Book Location slip, available at the Reference desk, to locate call numbers within the library.
If you wish to broaden your search and find out what other libraries own or what is currently in print, you can consult:
If the Warren Hunting Smith Library does not own a particular title, you may request a copy via Interlibrary Loan.
A note on Scholarly Journal Articles: There is a significant difference between popular magazine articles from publications such as Time, Harper's Bazaar, and Popular Photography and scholarly articles from journals such as the Journal of American History, Harvard Education Review, and Developmental Biology. An article is very likely scholarly in nature if:
START your article search by selecting an online database or print index.
If you have a citation for an article, but no full-text, search for the citation's Journal or Source using the Library's Journals search. The Journals search includes all print and full-text, online journals available.
If the Library does not subscribe to the Journal, the article can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.
Use the Library's Journals search to find print and online journals. You can search for a journal by title or browse all journals by subject.
All Course Reserves are listed online in the Library's Catalog. Search for reserves by Instructor or Course. Print reserves may not leave the library and generally circulate for 3 hours. If an item is listed as E-reserve click on the link at bottom which reads "click here to view article." If you are off campus, you will be prompted for your ID and password. For more information about course reserves contact Beth Beretta at 781-3013.
To find DVDs and videos that the Library owns, use the DVDs and Videos page.
To request an item through Interlibrary Loan, create an account and follow the instructions at: http://illiad.hws.edu.
HWS students, faculty and staff should connect to the wireless network by following the instructions on the IT Services site. HWSGuestWireless is available to campus visitors and will appear under wireless network browse lists.
