Students
interested in the study of media and society examine the role of the media
in shaping social consciousness while exploring their own expressive and
creative capacities. The examination of "media" embraces the
representation of ideas and the imagination in literature, music, the
visual arts, the press, television, and film.
About The Program
Media and society is an interdisciplinary program designed to study the
social, cultural, economic, and political influences of global communications,
mass media, the press, and the arts. Students also develop their capacity
of expression in writing, music, dance or the visual arts. The purpose
of the program is to encourage students to pursue their creative interests
while developing a critical understanding of the influences-both desirable
and undesirable-that mass media, the press, and the arts have and can
have on society in an emerging global economy.
The media and society program offers an interdisciplinary major and minor.
Both the major and the minor require students to complete work in two
areas: media studies and the creative arts. All media and society majors
must also complete an internship and cognate courses in American history
or social consciousness, and in social theory, and demonstrate competence
in a foreign language.
