Students can
“do honors” through the Colleges’ honors program. Every
year, select seniors decide to undertake honors (normally for both semesters
in their senior year). Students focus on a specific topic and (normally)
write a substantial original paper on that topic (students whose primary
field is creative, such as art, would produce original artistic works).
Doing honors gives a student an opportunity to work closely with an individual
faculty member. Media and Society students have done the following honors
projects:
1999-2000:
Erin Zipfel, “Broken Mind: Myself as Defined by a Learning Disability,”
Linda Robertson, adviser.
2002-2003: Laura DesRochers, “Re-Creating Memory: An Herstorical Approach
to Historical Connections,” Eugen Baer, adviser.
Eden Lenore Kram, “The Mystery of the Roman Scrolls: An Emma Bea,
Time Detective, Adventure,” Linda Robertson, adviser.
Katrina Olympia Wood, “What’s in a Name? The Significance
of Sports and Advertisement in American Society,” Iva Ellen Deutchman,
adviser.
2005
Jacqueline Byrnes Johnson, "Nothing to Claim for Fame," Iva E. Deutchman, adviser.
2006 Rachel A. Henderson, "Young and Thin: Images of Women in the Media," Iva E. Deutchman, adviser.
2008 Felipe Estefan, "Mexican Cinema: Cultural Imagery & National Identity," Lester Friedman, adviser.
Students may also be inducted into the Nu Omega chapter of Lambda Pi Eta,
the National Communications Honor Society. Every spring the chapter inaugurates
new students.
