MaryAnn Hamilton was named to the position
of Colleges Organist at Hobart and William Smith upon completion
of her
Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music
in May 2000. She also holds the Master of Sacred Music degree
from Union Theological Seminary, New York City. Her teachers
have included David Higgs, John Weaver and Gerre Hancock (improvisation).
In addition to playing for College Chapel services, weddings,
funerals and Baccalaureate, MaryAnn also plays a monthly organ
program called "Music,
Meditation, and Munchies." Typical programs explore music from various
periods and nationalities and also include collaborations with the voice faculty,
dance department and Mixed Ensemble. The programs are held in the noon hour
on the first Wednesday of the month, September through December and February
through May.
Her academic contributions include being a guest lecturer at the Florence
Price Symposium, Agnes Scott College, Decatur, GA, 1997, on a topic
entitled "Suite
No. 1 for Organ: A Fusion of African, European, American and Gender Elements." Her
interest in the music of women composers is further reflected in her published
article in the American Choral Review entitled "Amy Beach--Mass in
Eb Major: An American Classic" (Summer/Fall 1998).
In addition to her duties at the Colleges, Ms. Hamilton is the Parish Musician
at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Geneva, where she plays the organ for Sunday
services and directs the Adult Mixed Choir. She is married to David, a gastroenterologist,
and lives in Rochester, New York. They are the parents of three children.
