Flutist John Oberbrunner is a native of New York City, raised
in Manhattan, where he attended the Music and Art High School.
He then attended Syracuse University, where he graduated with
a degree in Music Education. He was hired to teach flute at
Syracuse University, where he remained for 47 years, concurrent
to his 35 years of teaching in the Syracuse public schools.
He is also flute instructor at the Eastern Music Camp at Colgate
College.
Local efforts to bring symphonic music to Syracuse climaxed
in the early sixties with the founding of the Syracuse Symphony
Orchestra. John became a charter member in 1961. So highly
regarded was his work that onseveral occasions he was honored
to be the featured performing artist of the concert. His distinguished
symphonic career continued until 1994.
John has also been involved with Friends of Chamber Music
and the Society for New Music (SNM), serving last year as president
of Friends of Chamber Music and presently as a board member
of SNM. His interest in contemporary music is the wellspring
of his work on Fresh Ink, a program aired on Fridays
at 8:00 p.m. on Syracuse public radio station WCNY. Fresh
Ink primarily presents contemporary classical music that
has been composed in the last decade or so.
