Dr. Patricia Ann Myers is
a Professor of Music at Hobart and William Smith Colleges,
where, since 1977, she has taught music history, theory, and
ethnomusicology courses, as well as interdisciplinary topics
like The Ballets Russe, Modernism in the Arts, Renaissance
Music and Architecture, African Music and Art, and Eighteenth-Century
Opera in Vienna and Peking. Myers is a recognized scholar of
early music, especially of the development of the Italian madrigal.
The twenty-volume edition Luca Marenzio: The Secular Works is
considered a model for combining critical editorial practice
with the practical needs of performers. Her lifelong interest
in text-music relationships can be seen in the many courses
she has offered in opera, and her fascination with other musical
cultures has led to courses in Russian, African, and Asian
musics.
Prior to coming to the Colleges, Myers held faculty positions
in musicology at New York University and at The Eastman School
of the University of Rochester. Myers received her baccalaureate
degree in music history from Oberlin College, her M.A. in musicology
from the University of Oregon, and her Ph.D. in musicology
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
