Andrew Zaplatynsky has served as concertmaster
of the Syracuse
Symphony Orchestra since 1981. Previous positions include Associate Concertmaster with the Cincinnati Symphony and Assistant Concertmaster with the Detroit Symphony. In addition, Zaplatynsky has been a member of the first violin section with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. These many years of orchestral experience have presented opportunities to work with some of the most notable conductors of the last thirty years, including Leonard Bernstein, Thomas Schippers, Leonard Slatkin, Erich Leinsdorf, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Yuri Temirkanov, Kiryl Kondrashin, Christopher Keene, Gerard Schwarz, Daniel Hege and Kazuyoshi Akiyama.
Zaplatynsky began his violin studies in Philadelphia with Edgar Ortenberg at the Settlement Music School. After graduating from high school he continued violin studies with the two most eminent teachers of their generation, Josef Gingold at Indiana University and later with Ivan Galamian, in New York. As a member of the Detroit Symphony, he was coached in many of the traditional concertmaster solos by Mischa Mischakoff (former concertmaster of the NBC Symphony under ArturoToscanini). His chamber music coaches have included Arthur Balsam, Janos Starker, William Primrose, Fritz Magg, as well as members of the Hungarian String Quartet.
Since 2005, Zaplatynsky has had visiting professor status with the School of Music of the Fundacion Universitaria Juan N. Corpas in Bogota, Colombia, where he combines teaching, chamber music coaching, and performance with faculty and advanced students.
Zaplatynsky plays on a Josef Curtin (MacArthur Foundation Fellow) violin, made in 1995 and modeled after the "Lady Stretton" Guarnerius
