The Department of Music offers both a disciplinary and an
interdisciplinary minor. Those considering either type of music
minor are encouraged to start their coursework in the first
year. A recommended starter course is Introduction to Music
Theory (MUS 110), which is offered every fall semester as well
as sometimes in the spring semester.
Interdisciplinary music minors are required to take a total
of seven courses: six music courses and one non-music elective
course from the departments of art, history, education, philosophy,
religious studies, anthropology, languages, dance, or another
department, chosen in consultation with the advisor.
Courses required for the interdisciplinary music minor (seven
credits in all) are as follows:
Music Theory:
MUS120 Theory and Aural Skills I (Tonal)
MUS121 Theory and Aural Skills II (Tonal)
History (choose two of the following three):
MUS202 History of Western Art Music: Medieval and Renaissance
(600-1600)
MUS203 History of Western Art Music: Baroque and Classical
(1600-1800)
MUS204 History of Western Art Music: Romantic and Modern (1800-1950)
Music Ensemble Participation and/or Taking Music Lessons:
Two course credits earned through any combination of participation
in a department ensemble and private applied instruction (i.e.,
totaling four semesters).
One non-music elective course:
One course chosen from the departments of art, history, education,
philosophy, religious studies, anthropology, modern languages,
dance, or another department, chosen in consultation with the
advisor.
