Williams Hall was a much-needed Hobart gymnasium, built
in 1907. Its brick and stone construction harmonized with the
Jacobean architecture of nearby Coxe Hall and Medbery Hall.
It is named in memory of an "amiable child," to quote
the plaque on the front of the building. Charlie Rose Williams,
a Geneva boy, age 12, drowned in Seneca Lake while ice skating.
There was a running track above the first-floor gymnasium and
a swimming pool in the basement. The gymnasium was often used
for college dances, as well.
Williams Hall was Hobart's gymnasium until Bristol Gymnasium
opened in 1965. Williams was renovated to house the post office,
bookstore, and the Department of Art and the Department of
Music. The Music department is still headquartered there but
today, Williams Hall has become one of the major computer facilities
on campus. The Colleges' VAX 6000-510 computer, the backbone
of the Colleges' academic computing network, is housed in Williams.
It also supports the electronic mail accounts and Internet
access of everyone at the Colleges.
