Majoring In Music (B.A.)

HWS Chorale

The Department of Music offers a disciplinary music major.

Those considering a major in music are encouraged to start their coursework in the first year. A recommended starter course is Introduction to Music Theory (MUS 110), which is offered every fall semester as well as sometimes in the spring semester.



Music majors are required to take twelve departmental courses:

MUS203 History of Western Art Music: Baroque and Classical (1600-1800)
MUS204 History of Western Art Music: Romantic and Modern (1800-1950)

Upper Level
MUS401 Form and Analysis
MUS460 Seminar in Music History

Elective (choose one)
MUS130 Beethoven: The Man and His Music
MUS150 In a Russian Voice: Music from Glinka to Stravinsky
MUS160 The Symphony
MUS190 History of Rock and Roll
MUS206 Opera as Drama
MUS207 Music in American Culture: Jazz and Popular
MUS210 American Musical Theatre
MUS216 Music of Asia
MUS400 Orchestration
MUS450 Independent Study (various topics including conducting, composition, and instrumental and vocal methods)

In addition
two course credits earned through participation in a major choral or
instrumental ensemble for four semesters, or by taking private instruction for four semesters, or by taking two semesters of ensemble and two of private instruction.

Note: The Department of Music also offers both disciplinary and interdisciplinary minors.
