Minoring In Music

HWS Chorale

The Department of Music offers both a disciplinary and an interdisciplinary minor. Those considering either type of music minor are encouraged to start their coursework in the first year. A recommended starter course is Introduction to Music Theory (MUS 110), which is offered every fall semester as well as sometimes in the spring semester.


Minoring in Music (Disciplinary)

Courses required for the disciplinary music minor (six credits in all) are as follows:

MUS120 Theory and Aural Skills I (Tonal)
MUS121 Theory and Aural Skills II (Tonal)

History (choose two of the following three)
MUS202 History of Western Art Music: Medieval and Renaissance (600-1600)
MUS203 History of Western Art Music: Baroque and Classical (1600-1800)
MUS204 History of Western Art Music: Romantic and Modern (1800-1950)

Elective (choose one of the following)
MUS130 Beethoven: The Man and His Music
MUS150 In a Russian Voice: Music from Glinka to Stravinsky
MUS160 The Symphony
MUS206 Opera as Drama
MUS207 Music in American Culture: Jazz and Popular
MUS210 American Musical Theatre
MUS216 Music of Asia
MUS231 Theory and Aural Skills (Chromatic)
MUS232 Theory and Aural Skills (Chromatic; Counterpoint)
MUS400 Orchestration
MUS401 Form and Analysis (prerequisite: 231)
MUS450 Independent Study (various topics including conducting, composition, and instrumental and vocal methods)
MUS460 Seminar in Music History

In addition
One course credit needs to be earned through participation in a major choral or instrumental ensemble for two semesters, or by private applied
instruction for two semesters.

 

Minoring in Music (Interdisciplinary)

Interdisciplinary music minors are required to take a total of seven courses: six music courses and one non-music elective course from the departments of art, history, education, philosophy, religious studies, anthropology, languages, dance, or another department, chosen in consultation with the advisor. Courses required for the interdisciplinary music minor (seven credits in all) are as follows:

MUS120 Theory and Aural Skills I (Tonal)
MUS121 Theory and Aural Skills II (Tonal)

History (choose two)
MUS202 History of Western Art Music: Medieval and Renaissance (600-1600)
MUS203 History of Western Art Music: Baroque and Classical (1600-1800)
MUS204 History of Western Art Music: Romantic and Modern (1800-1950)

Music Ensemble Participation and/or Taking Music Lessons
Two two course credits earned through participation in a major choral or
instrumental ensemble, or by private applied instruction, for four semesters.

One non-music elective course
One course chosen from the departments of art, history, education, philosophy, religious studies, anthropology, modern languages, dance, or another department, chosen in consultation with the advisor.
