The Aleph: A Journal of Global Perspectives, a yearly literary/artistic journal published by the Partnership for Global Education, showcases the poetry, prose, photography and art of Hobart and William Smith and Union students who have studied abroad, as well as international students at both institutions. Each issue will serve to expand the cultural frontiers of the campus communities and provide a space in which students can express their backgrounds and cross-cultural experiences.

Rationale

Study abroad often plays a pivotal role in the development of a student’s world view. However, students returning from abroad often admit that they are frustrated with the fact that few people really want to hear about their experiences in any depth. This frustration can lead to a “disconnect” between their experiences abroad and life back on campus.

The Aleph, by providing a space for them to express their experiences, will help alleviate this difficulty with great potential gain for both student and campus community. On the one hand, by integrating their programs into the academic and social fabric of the campus, the student will be able to build upon and apply their experience. On the other hand, the campus community will gain from an opportunity to grow in appreciation of global diversity.

International students admit experiencing a very similar frustration with the seeming disinterest of the student body. The Aleph will provide them an opportunity to share something unique and interesting about their countries and cultures as a means of "educating" the campus communities as well as a way to integrate more fully into campus life.

Editorial Philosophy

The aleph, according to Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, is a mythical point in space from which all things, and the relationships between them, can be seen and understood. In a world where cross-cultural understanding is much talked about but sorely in evidence, The Aleph: A Journal of Global Perspectives seeks to create a space where this necessary dialogue can occur. The editors of The Aleph are seeking work by students who studied abroad or international students on the campuses of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Union College who are interested in exploring their diverse backgrounds and experiences in the media of poetry, prose, photography and art. The Aleph will publish foreign language pieces alongside English translations, and will group selections of varying media together to create a coherent dialogue through the pages of the journal. Select works will be published in color.
