SIIF project summaries

The Partnership for Global Education’s SIIF program provides small grants to motivated students to undertake projects abroad that build upon their own interests or that augment their existing course of study. The fund encourages students to dig deeper into the culture they are exploring, and provides them with structured outlets to share their experiences upon returning. We invite you to read more about the different projects students have undertaken.

Eyeing China

Casey Post studied abroad in Nanjing, China in Spring 2001 with the goal of improving her Chinese (Mandarin) and studying classical temple architecture and the role of Buddhism in Chinese history. Post’s SIIF grant enabled her to visit important but out-of-the-way sites, and bring these images back to the campus communities. She has since incorporated her SIIF findings into her academic work and has shared her images and experiences with the campus.

Senegal in Pictures

Hannah Scaife, Melissa Scott and Greg Freeman studied in Dakar, Senegal in Spring 2001. There they gained an appreciation of the Senegalese sense of community, which Scott called “the bread that sustains their souls when there is no bread to satisfy their hunger.” They explored many aspects of Senegal through their SIIF grant, and brought their experiences home with slide shows, drumming and dancing demonstrations, and discussions with future Senegal-program students.

Scandinavian Architecture

Keara Watson studied modern “Green” architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark in Fall 2000. Her SIIF grant enabled her to document the many buildings she studied and bring not just the shapes of Scandinavian architecture back to the campuses, but also the idea that “the Danes are leading the way in designing for the future and advocating the awareness of our precious environment  through their architecture.” Keara presented her findings to the HWS community at the first annual fall SIIF night, called The Students' Eye; Perspectives from Abroad. Daily life in Italy

Michelle Torres studied in Florence in Spring 2001. Her SIIF grant enabled her to complete  an extensive photo-project that examined, in a series of black and white images, the daily life of several Italian cities. Torres, who shared a gallery opening with the previous three SIIF grantees at Union College in Fall 2001, stated: “I hope my photographs can adequately represent the people I met, the city I grew to call home and the culture I embraced.”

Australia: Captured Images

Terri Hilton studied on the PGE program in Queensland, Australia in Fall 2001. In addition to the intense field ecology work of the program, Hilton, with SIIF support, captured vibrant color images of Australia’s diverse natural forms. Hilton contributed some of her best images to be published in the PGE journal The Aleph, and gave a luncheon slide presentation in which she shared her “captured images,” and the context needed to appreciate them, with the wider campus.

Battered Women in Sao Paulo

Saima Husain studied in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1999.  On this program, which examines the role of women, technology and economic development in one of the world’s largest cities and elsewhere in Brazil, Saima developed a research interest in the treatment of battered women by the public service system. A SIIF grant helped Saima to return to Sao Paulo in Winter 2001 to conduct in-depth research into this issue.

Aesthetics in Nature: Ireland

John Thompson studied in Galway, Ireland in Fall 2001. Thompson, funded by a SIIF grant, undertook an independent study with the Philosophy department at Union College to examine the principles of aesthetics as they manifest themselves in the Irish landscape. His goal was to create a website that would explain these principles in lay terms, illustrated by his black and white photographs.

Flamenco en Sevilla

Josh Berry, a music major with experience in classical guitar, studied in Seville, Spain in Winter 2002. Berry explored the culture of Spain by learning Flamenco guitar, a traditional yet still vibrant style of music with Spanish and Moorish roots. Berry’s SIIF grant enabled him to locate and hire a tutor who not only taught Berry how to play the music, but also provided great insight into the life of Spain. Berry has shared Flamenco, and his experiences learning it, at coffee houses and other campus events.

Journaling in Italy

When Mary Cinadr studied in Ecuador and Peru in 2001, she began to find her voice as a writer. So, when she applied for another term abroad, this time in Rome, she sought out a SIIF grant to help her develop her skills. Cinadr’s grant enabled her to assemble a scrap-book of her experiences in Italy, including selections from her thoughtful and thought-provoking journals, black and white photographs, and other mementos collected along the way. The scrapbook will be transferred to CD-ROM as a resource for future Italy program students. Preview
