Welcome to the Physics Department

Classroom TeacherWELCOME to the Physics Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Physics is the science that seeks simple principles to explain natural phenomena. Our curriculum introduces students to the principal subfields mechanics, electromagnetism, thermal physics, optics, and quantum mechanics and provides the most extensive training in mathematical and analytical methods of any of the sciences.

Because physics is the foundation upon which all other sciences and engineering are based, its study provides a strong background for students who plan careers in areas such as physics, astrophysics, astronomy, geophysics, oceanography, meteorology, engineering, operations research, teaching, medicine, and law.

About the Physics Program

Students and Teacher In addition to offering a major and a minor program, the physics department administers a joint-degree program with Columbia University and the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. Upon completion of three years at HWS and two years at an engineering school, a student will receive a B.S. in engineering from the engineering school and a either a B.A. or a B.S. from HWS.
