Albert Holland Prize for Public Presentations
of Physics 1999
The winner of the 1999 Albert Holland Prize
is !
The second Albert Holland Prize competition was held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday,
April 20, 1999. An audience of students, faculty, and community members
heard an array of impressive students lectures. Each lecture derived an
important result in Physics. The six student contestants represented the
diversity of the Hobart and William Smith Natural Science Division. The
contestant and their lectures, in order of presentation, were:
Greg Baker '00, a junior Physics major Harmonic Oscillators Everywhere
Erik Russell '99/'00, a senior Physics and Engineering major One dimensional lattice vibrations
Andy Dougherty '99, a senior Physics major The Precession of the Equinoxes
Jamie Brown '99, a senior Math major Motivating Gauge Invariance via the Schrodinger Equation
Jamie Hurlbert '00, a junior Biochemistry major Static Cling in a Dielectric
Scott Runyon '99, a senior Geoscience major A Model for Heat Flow in the Earth
Prof. Larry Campbell moderated the event. The judges were Prof. Donald
Spector (Physics), Prof. Peggy Nikolopoulou (English), and Prof. Jim Spates
(Sociology).
